Explain Point To Point Network Device

Network devices allow host devices to connect in the network and communication to each other. Explain Point To Point Network Device.

Which type of network devices

Common here is the Network Devices are

  • Network Interface Card (NIC)
  • Hub
  • Bridge
  • Repeater
  • Switch
  • Router

  • Firewall

  • Gateway

Top 8 common Network Devices on the explain in the website

1. Network Interface Card

Allow host devices to connect in network. Provides unique identity to each device (MAC Address). Decides the medium to connect the device in network. Also Called LAN card. Physical Card or Ethernet Card.

2. Hybrid Universal Broadcast (HUB)

  • Operate at Layer-1 (Physical Layer) of OSI Model and used as a centralized device in star network.
  • Connect Multiple Devices together in a network and allow them to communicate.
  • Does not provide intelligent forwarding as send signal to every port (Excluding sender port).
  • It work in half duplex mode and collision mau occur in HUB.
  • It does not provide error checking.
  • There are 3 Types of HUB (Active, Passive, and Hybrid).
  • Also called multiple port Repeater.
  • HUB data transfer speed is maximum 10 Mbps.
  • HUB available in maximum 16 ports.

3. Bridge

  • It operate at Layer-2  (Data- Link Layer) of OSI Model.
  • Bridge is a device that allows you to break a big network into small segments reduce the network traffic.

  • It can inspect each message coming to it, and make decision either to forward the message in next segment or dropped.

  • It create MAC-Address table to make decision in which segment data should be forwarded.
  • A bridge sometimes combined with Router in a product called Brouter.
  • Transparent Bridge, Source Route Bridge and Translational Bridge are the common type of Bridges.
  • Bridge data transfer speed is maximum 10 mbps and it available in only 4 ports. Now these days switch replace the bridge.

4. Repeater

  • When signals travels through cables for a long distance they lose strength, this loss of signal is called Attenuation.
  • Repeaters recieve week signal as input, amplify it and send in network.
  • Operates at the Layer-1 (Physical Layer) of OSI Model.

5. Switch

  • Operates at Layer-2 (Data Link Layer) of OSI Model and used as a centralized device in a star network.
  • Connect Multiple Devices together in a network and allow them to communicate to each other.
  • Provides intelligent forwarding as send frame to the specific Destination (Build and uses MAC-Address table to lookup destination port).
  • It works in full duplex mode and avoid collision in network.
  • It provides error checking on the frame.
  • There are 2 types of Switch (Manageable and Non-Manageable).
  • Switch perform first time broadcast for create MAC-Address table for each device connected in the network. After creating MAC-Address table for each device that connected in network it use Unicast communication.
  • Switch data transfer rate is 10/100/1000mb and more than.
  • Switch available in 4/8/16/24/48 port.
  • Switch work on CSMA-CA mechanism.

6. Router

  • Router is an internetworking device which operates at Later-3 (Network Layer) of OSI Model.
  • It is use to communicate different networks(Subnets).
  • It provides shortest and fastest route to a packet in order to reach destination.
  • It provides better protection as a hardware firewall against hacking.
  • It does not pass the broadcast traffic (i.e. ARP and DHCP).

  • It acts as a gateway for LAN devices to communication other network.

  • Router use routing table to reach source to destination.

7. Firewall

  • Firewall monitors incoming and outgoing traffic.
  • It filters the traffic according to incoming outgoing rules.
  • It permits authorized users and block unknown.
  • Provide security from unauthorized access.
  • You can use Hardware firewall or software firewall to secure your computer and network.
  • We will discuss firewall in great detail in CCNA Security.
8. Gateway

  • Gateway work at the Transport and Session layers of the OSI model.
  • Gateways provide translation between networking technologies.
  • Gateways perform all of the functions of routers.
  • Gateways connect two or more autonomous networks
