What is a coaxial cable?

The coaxial cable is a round-shaped cable consisting of a main conductor wire called an inner conductor that is covered with a thick solid plastic insulation and has foils over it and is forged with a metal wire that is wrapped The outer is called conductor and the top is a plastic pipe which provides protection to all of them.

There are some points about the Coaxial Cable

Coaxial cable consists of a solid copper cable between different types of insulators.

We can transfer data through this copper cable in our network.

It provide better interface protection through EMI and RFI.

That Cable data transfer speed is 10mbps and it provides a half-duplex mode that why we use this cable in our network.

This cable now these days use in cable tv.

 Where does coaxial cable use

Coaxial cable is mostly used in cable TV, it is also used in computer networks, but currently, it is very rarely used in computer networks.

2 type of coaxial cable

  1. Thin coaxial cable
  2. Thick Coaxial cable

1. RG58 THINNET COAXIAL

The maximum segment length is 200m.

Interference protection is better than twisted-pair cables

Offers resistance of 50 ohms.

BNC-T connector is used to connect this cable.

Used in thinnet (10BASE2) network.

Mostly used in changing environments.

Easy to add/remove devices from the network using RG58 cable.

The cheapest form of coaxial cable.

2. RG8 THICK COAXIAL

The maximum segment length is 500m.

Interference protection is good compared to any copper cable.

Offers resistance of 50 ohms.

AUI and Vampire Tap connector is used to connect this cable.

Used in a 10BASE5 network

Expensive than RG58.

A disadvantage is a rigidness due to which is only used as a backbone.
